NOW SOLD OUT! The Village's own book The Drayton St Leonard Village History Society is proud to have achieved our first objective, and on Thursday 15th June 2000 we published the first edition of our book about the village and its history. The Launch ceremony was held in the Village hall and was attended by a large and enthusiastic audience. As well as being able to collect their copies of the book, people were able to view some of the large collection of archive material that has been collected by the Village History Society. This material includes many maps, photographs and other ancient documents plus many examples of artifacts found in and around the village including things like Roman Coins. This archive is maintained by the Village History Society to preserve as much of the history of the village as possible, and is continually being added to as more discoveries are made. The book, entitled "Drayton St Leonard - Our Village" is a professionally printed and bound softback book running to some 260 pages. This is almost twice the size of the original estimate. A whole range of subjects is covered including both modern and ancient history of our village together with many excellent illustrations, maps and photographs. The History society is a non profit making club made up of village residents, working entirely due to the dedication and enthusiasm of its members, though we have received some grants to help offset the cost and ensure that the project suceeds. The first print run was 500 books. Many of these were ordered in advance by subscribers and all the rest have now been sold at the cover price of £9.95 (plus postage) To better describe the book, the following is a copy of the paper copy of the announcement of the book. DRAYTON ST LEONARD : OUR VILLAGE .... An attractive riverside village with interesting old restored church. .... An oasis amongst cabbage fields and caravans .... A gross waste of housing land That is how others have viewed Drayton St Leonard. But now a team of local researchers has collected material about the village, including its remote and recent history, its activities, its interesting buildings and the people who have lived here. In June 2000 (coinciding with the village's millennium celebrations) we will publish an illustrated paperback book about the village. Read about the Village Ghost Discover who was regularly wheeled home from the Three Pigeons in a barrow Learn about the 1965 air disaster In short, discover things about the village you never even guessed at The book is sold out - ask around, maybe someone can lend you a copy. |
